Dr. Charles Drago Kato

Senior Research Scientist | Lecturer  

Charles Drago Kato is a Lecturer at the Department of Biotechnical and Diagnostic Sciences, School of Biosecurity, Biotechnical and Laboratory Sciences at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. Charles attained his PhD from Makerere University in Clinical Immunology and Molecular Genetics. He holds a Master of Science degree in Structure Molecular Biology from the University of London and a second Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology from Makerere University. Charles`s research interests are in the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutic innovation through biomarker discovery and clinical translation for infectious and non-communicable diseases like cancer.
Charles is currently working on the development of lateral flow assays for sleeping sickness, SARS-COV2, and prostate cancer. Charles is a group leader for the biomarker discovery and
clinical translation hub and laboratory at Makerere University. He has attracted research funding of over 5 million USD and is an author of over 60 peer-reviewed research articles.
