Dr. Wilber Sabiiti

Senior Translational Research Scientist 

Dr. Wilber Sabiiti (BSc Zoology/Biochemistry – Makerere University Uganda, MSc Molecular Biology – Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, PhD Biosciences – University of Birmingham UK) has over 15+ years of experience in translational research, working on the interface of applied biological science and healthcare provision. His work takes a holistic approach from primary discovery and optimisation in the laboratory to addressing barriers of translating biomedical research innovations into policy and practice.

His expertise includes infectious diseases, molecular diagnostics, antimicrobial resistance and implementation science. He has led and participated in several international research consortia and networks, primarily between UK and Africa, but also continental Europe, Asia and North America.

He is the co-inventor of the tuberculosis Molecular Bacterial Load Assay (TB-MBLA), the first ever fully quantitative test for human TB including the monitoring of TB bacterial load as patients respond to treatment. He is the principal investigator of the St. Andrews-Africa Health Research network (StAAHR) and co-chairs the COVID-19 Clinical Research Coalition Virology, Immunology and Diagnostics Working Group.

Dr. Sabiiti is a member of several learned societies and committees across the world including the Commonwealth academic advisors and NIHR College of Experts on Global Efforts to fight COVID-19. He teaches Introductory epidemiology & TB pathology, diagnosis and treatment to Bachelor of Medicine students and Interdisciplinary approaches to solving global health challenges to Master of International development- students.
